I Treasure A Town Like Alice March 4, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
At least once a year I watch this excellent production of A Town Like Alice. This is one of those magical adaptations where the actors cease to be performers and become real people who transport you to and immerse you in their world.
I first saw it on PBS in the 80's and then many years later saw the VHS tape for sale in Parade, a supplement to our Sunday paper. This was not typical marketing for the time and it may be a clue to why this wonderful adaptation is not available on DVD today. The one tape edition I received was not the best of quality but I later found the two tape editions a little better.
The chemistry between the characters played by Bryan Brown and Helen Morse is wonderful and very authentic. Bryan Brown is one manly man. There was a reason why Rachel Ward married him both on and off screen. I also love this film because of Gordon Jackson. I had fallen in love with his noble, gentle character, Hudson, in Upstairs Downstairs, and his character here, Noel, is equally as endearing.
This story celebrates the good in people of all backgrounds and the power of human endurance and determination. It always helps to restore my faith in mankind. I also like a tall "cold beer" and love the important role it plays in this movie.
Do yourself a favor and watch this production, even if it means ordering a used VHS tape before they disappear forever. I add my wish that this will be available on dvd soon. At least get Nevil Shute's novel and read that.
One of my favorite movies September 26, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Oh! how I wish this was on DVD. I love this movie, and have watched it countless times. Some day my VHS tape will break and it won't be available anymore. Please put it on DVD!
VHS a Town Like Alice September 3, 2007 I had been looking for this out of print product to send to an ailing friend. It is a wonderful movie, a feel good movie about a strong woman character. It is a love story partly set during WWII, England and Australia. One of my favorite Movies! It arrived in great condition and fast. I was glad to find a copy.
PLEASE HELP ME (and others who are interested in this film) February 18, 2007 I have given up - at least for the time being - waiting for this series to be released In DVD format, in any Region, so have decided to but one of these used VHS versions. What I would like to know is whether the 2 or 3 tape versions are worth the extra money, quality-of-the print-wise, over the single tape, probably EP version, if it will only be viewed occasionally? Thanks, in advance, for any replies.
We want this on DVD NOW!!!! February 11, 2007 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
What is the problem? Not on DVD!!! This TV movie is a beautiful adaptation that was given the time (5 hours) to fully express Nevil Shute's novel of the horror of WWI and a touching love story that grew from those horrors. It may not have the greatest of productions due to the fact that it was a made-for-TV movie but the dedication of its main actors overshadow those deficiencies. For a love story to succeed I have a fairly easy test. Do I fall in love with the woman and do I wish I was the man. For this movie - definitely YES! Helen Morses's overbite is even cuter than Gene Tierneys and that's pretty hard to beat. I watch this movie once a year until now - I dumped the VCR and went to DVR. But this movie is never shown on cable and is not available on DVD. I might have to buy a VCR just to watch it this year. So PLEASE release this on DVD now!!
