Weighing in at less than 12 ounces and measuring just 11 inches wide, the Pentax DSmobile lets you carry around all you need to scan everything from a business card to an 8.5 by 14 inch document. The scanner draws power from its USB interface so no clunky AC adapter is needed. Bring it along with you and you can instantly transmit a printed page via email, fax, or the web. The scanner has a hardware optical resolution of 300 dpi and the included OCR software automatically converts the document to editable text. The scanner uses a Contact Image Sensor (CIS) to achieve its smaller volume and lighter weight, and also requires less power consumption and lower maintenance than a traditional CCD. The DSmobile has few moving parts, which promotes high reliability and nearly maintenance-free operation. It consumes only 0.2 watt of power in standby mode and a maximum of 2.2 watts of power when scanning. Good small scanner, creates great PDF files. November 13, 2008
Pros: only requires USB cable, no power cable needed. 600dpi setting can be set and it remembers it next time you launch the application. One-time Installation and calibration was easy. Image is displayed as it scans the paper. PDF file created is automatically opened in default application after scan is finished. Quality of scan in PDF file is great. I have not tried other file type outputs.
Cons: File created is saved using a default filename in one particular directory. You can change the filename and directory prior to scanning, but if you close the application, it uses the old default filename/directory names again.
Doesn't work on Vista 64 Bit November 13, 2008
I jumped the gun on this. I bought it because I saw it's compatible on Vista, but it's not compatible on the 64 bit platform.
I asked the customer service rep at Pentax about this and was told they have no plans on supporting the 64 bit platform.
Otherwise, it worked great when I use to have XP :(

I purchased this scanner in early August. It was delivered the next day even though I ordered it in the afternoon PST (from Vegas). I needed a simple accurate scanner for invoices, receipts, documents, etc. while I am traveling. This scanner took only a few minutes to setup and works great. I can select the scan size which really works well. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the scanner automatically created multiple page PDF documents (multiple receipts scanned into one document). The scanner fits easily into my PC case and only takes a minute (literally) to hook up to my PC and scan receipts and other documents. It even works great on light printing, i.e.,gas station receipts. Highly recommended t all people who travel and need a portable scanner.

After 30+ years of collecting recipes and never knowing exactly what is where, I decided to scan them into a computer folder, by category, and always have them at my fingertips! This little scanner is exactly what I wanted and is doing a marvelous job. Only problem I'm having with it is changing the size of the item scanned - so I scan everything in a carrier, one size - and it works out fine. Very happy.
 Computer Brain sells this item and you would be a fool to buy from them October 19, 2008

I ordered this scanner through Amazon because it was highly rated. I waited nearly four weeks for delivery and then my order was cancelled with no explanation after I inquired about the delay. Amazon claims it has no control over third party sales, yet I ordered this item through AMAZON. The point is, you would be foolish to order this scanner through Amazon since the order goes to Computer Brain and they simply don't care that they are out of stock when they accept your order. No communication, no warning, merely accept the order, then cancel it. Who cares. And Amazon apparently does not care either.
