Outstanding Graphics
Ubisoft developed the Dunia Engine specifically for Far Cry 2. Among other things, the Dunia Engine delivers realistic, interactive environments, special effects, real-time night-and-day cycles, and smart enemy AI.

Expansive, Realistic Environment
Far Cry 2 is set in a fictional region of Africa where you are caught between two rival factions at war. The Ubisoft team spent a lot of time filming and photographing in Africa to get all the details of the landscape and native wildlife. The result is a huge gameplay area that is 50 square kilometers, taking players into and out of the jungle and savannah. Wild animals such as zebras, buffalo, gazelle are encountered during the game, with both players and enemies allowed to interact with them.

Far Cry 2 features an incredible level of detail and realism, with a minimal in-game interface to detract from immersion. For example, players will need to navigate the world using an in-game map and navigation system, weapons will disintegrate over time, and fires will spread and propagate.

Each of the actions a player takes is reflected in the environment and changes the content of the game. To fulfill your mission, you need to play the enemies against each other, using both strategy and skill.

Huge Range of Weapons and Vehicles
Far Cry 2 offers gamers a wide range of weapons, from a machete for hand-to-hand combat, to a sniper rifle that can stealthily pluck off enemies from afar. As weapons disintegrate over time, they might jam or even explode in your hand.

There are also a large range of vehicles such as gliders, trucks, cars, and boats that will let you fly, drive, slide, and hover over the open landscapes.

Multiplayer Options for up to 16 Players
Far Cry 2 supports up to 16 players and has four gameplay modes: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Diamond, and Uprising. Players can choose from six different classes in multiplayer, each with its own set of pros and cons. Just as in the single-player mode, multiplayer games will feature dynamic elements, making each session unique.

1 out of 5 stars DRM,no thanks   November 20, 2008

The last thing I need is to spend $50 just to have my PC ruined by that garbage DRM.. Save your money and your PC's, do not get this game.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome!   November 19, 2008

I'll be honest. After two hours I was ready to give up on this game. Then it started to get better. Then is got really good, and I ended up playing for 3-4 hours at once.

Warning though - this game is more like Grand Theft Africa than the original Far Cry. No linear story, just scattered missions.

I'm glad I stuck with it because it was great!

Here are some official ratings:

IGN 8.9/10
Metacritic: 86/100
Gamespot 8.5/10
GameRadar 9/10
CNET 4/5

So don't let the DRM haters scare you away! This game is great! It took me about 27 hours to finish it!

BOOM!

1 out of 5 stars Securom and Limit Installs Thru Steam   November 18, 2008

This is another game where the publisher has decided to treat its customers like pirates. I thought that if I bought the game through Steam I wouldn't have to deal with Securom, after all Steam has its own DRM system. The thing I like about Steam is that I don't need to have a CD in the drive and if I loose my data I can always download another copy of the game. Trade off - No resale value or second hand market.

Now, WHY IS FARCRY2 BUNDLED WITH SECUROM AND 5 INSTALLS IF YOU BUY IT THRU STEAM???? WTF is this? How am I pirating the game after I bought it through Steam and why I can only get to install it 5 times??? Why am I being treated like a pirate? Since when you only get 5 installs when it comes to PC games. This is a lawsuit waiting to happen, this limited use is ilegal and unethical.

I guess this is not Steam's fault, they are just complying with the publisher's directive and were at least honest enough to tell me when I asked them. I will keep buying games, not renting, through Steam as long as they don't have Securom. Below is the official response from Steam:

Thank you for contacting Steam Support. For any third-party games that include third-party DRM, it will be listed on the right-hand side of the storefront page for the game. You can see that "Far Cry 2" does include SecuROM: Title: Fary Cry 2 storefront pageLink: [...] Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Now, for you guys that call everyone who dislike Securom a pirate. What do you have to say??? Am I also considered a pirate??????

1 out of 5 stars Save your money   November 18, 2008

After playing for about 4 hours, the last two in hopes of some sort of game play improvement, I've come to the conclusion that this "game" is just one big joke. It couldn't be any less fun and is an insult to the original, which was outstanding. I should have read some of the reviews posted here before purchasing. Save your money...DO NOT BUY THIS GAME.

2 out of 5 stars Fun for a couple of hours   November 17, 2008

Far Cry 2 is a very beautiful game, but what is beauty without substance?

Playing on a decent computer you can appreciate all the time and effort that was put in the graphics department even so much as to wander around aimlessly admiring the scenery, but that is where my approval for the game ends.

After the first couple of hours you realize that you are going to be doing the same thing over and over again, pick up mission then drive to the other side of the map and accomplish mission. This formula works for GTA because there is an abundance of other distractions and side missions in the world but in Far Cry 2 the only thing you are doing is driving back and forth between identical missions.

The game is not story driven, nor is the voice acting any good, just about every single aspect of the game feels tacked on to the superb graphics engine.
