Numerous lifetimes they found each other, only to die at a young age. August 31, 2005 Courtesy of Love Romances Reviews
Numerous lifetimes they found each other, only to die at a young age. This was their last chance - they only have ten days to break the curse or they would never be together again.
Michael Archer has been searching... searching for the one woman he has loved for an eternity, through too many lifetimes to count. Finally one day he finds the lead that will direct him to her door, only to find a woman who is quite different from the lives she has lived in the past. His love reaches out to her but she is afraid.
Samantha Moore returns to the childhood home she loved, to put her father's affairs in order. He had died very suddenly, only a week after being given a clean bill of health by his doctor. She thought she had put the memories of this swamp home behind her, but that is not the case. When Archer arrives on her doorstep, she is frightened and suspicious, for she has a reaction she never expected to this man - the man who seems to know an awful lot about her.
Archer knew it was only a matter of time until Samantha put in an appearance at her home in the back woods. He had been led to her by her connection to a man Archer hates, Ed Benet, her business partner. He waits... and waits... but when Samantha arrives, she is nothing like he expected. She is driven by her work, her goals towards making money, and she has a no-nonsense approach that catches him unawares. She believes only in the here and now, and besides her repeating nightmares, so vivid she feels she lived through them, is not given to any flights of fancy. She also has numerous unexplainable phobias, which only Archer knows where they came from.
Samantha is drawn to the no-account drifter, knowing him from somewhere she can't place, with his strikingly memorable green eyes. She only knows that every man in her nightmares has those same eyes. Is that why she is attracted to him? Why she can't resist his allure, in spite of the warning bells screaming out in protest? And when her suspicions about him begin to surface even more, all the while she can't escape the magnetic pull between them, she has to make a choice, run from him or take him into her arms.
They are fast running out of time. Archer has to convince her to believe in him before it is too late, if there is ever to be a happy ending to their tumultuous lives - past and present. They must work together to change their fates, but Samantha is not inclined to believe, nor is Archer eager to work together, knowing he has been the cause of her death in every lifetime.
As fascinating as this story was, for some reason, this reviewer had a hard time getting into it, taking much longer to read it then normal for a book of its length/theme. There was no explainable reason for it, but there it was anyhow.
The characters are well depicted, brought to life with superb detail. They are full of passion and life, with strong personalities - from Samantha's inexplicable phobias to Archer's zeal to complete his mission at any cost. They are immediately drawn to each other, in spite of her suspicious mind and strange feelings to stay as far away from him as possible. But fate will have its way, no matter what, and they can't resist the allure of each other.
It was interesting to learn of Samantha's dramatic nightmares and eventually figure out what caused them. Archer is a strong soul, bound to her only to know it was his weak will and spirit that killed her every time. As her flashbacks become more erratic and begin to affect her life, the real meat of the story begins. There are also some interesting twists that were not expected initially, but become more evident as the story progresses, causing the reader to not quite be surprised about the turn of events.
As one can see, there is no real reason why this story did not speak out to this reviewer and grab hold, for it was a well-written story with a believable plot that should keep the pages turning. Something was missing is all that can be said, so this reviewer couldn't quite figure out exactly what that was, or what it was that didn't work for her.
