Worked for us. June 29, 2008 I've read a lot of mixed reviews about this mouse trap but so far it has worked well for us. We purchased it at our local hardware store for a little more then what amazon advertises it for, but after finding droppings in our kitchen cabinets we didn't want to wait for a delivery. We placed it where we saw the droppings and rubbed a small amount of peanut butter by the two entrances (just to leave a scent) and then placed a cracker with peanut butter inside. Within 45 minutes we caught a mouse then caught a second one overnight. In the morning we drove a 1/4 mile away and released them into the woods. With a 3 year old in the house it was nice to use a trap that doesn't snap shut or use poisons.
We've trapped plenty of mice with these April 15, 2008 We live deep in the woods, with all the country mice. We bought our first Tin Cats from a catalog aimed at Amish and Mennonite folk, if memory serves. We had excellent luck with them. They do deteriorate over time and can be hard to clean if you happen to leave them stored in the basement and don't know a mouse crept in (store them in a sturdy bag to prevent this). So we got the plastic and polyurethene version the second time we ordered. We had much less luck with these -- can't really say why.
So we're switching back to the galvanized metal version with the solid metal top. You have to listen out -- you'll hear the mouse scurrying around inside . So it's best to use them in well-traveled (by humans) areas of your house, like the kitchen or pantry. If your purpose is to be humane.
I'd guess we've caught 50-plus mice with these. Of course, there might be some repeaters. So when you take them out to release them -- drive at least a half-mile away. :^)
Victor Tin Cat Solid Top January 27, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased two Victor Tin Cat (solid top) and have bated with Peanut Butter. I have had them in the correct locations for about a week or more. I have caught absolutely no mice. This house is over-run with mice so I know they are there. These traps cost much more than the kill traps so I am stuck with two useless metal boxes. Don't believe all the good reviews you see. If you try it don't order more that one until you see if it will work or not. I will probably return these.
Nice live trap, works on mice and shrews October 26, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Although the description claims that no bait is needed, I've found that peanut butter works well for mice and salami works well for shrews. Smearing a bit of the bait on the entrance ramps seems to improve the effectiveness.
Also, the description doesn't make it completely clear that this is a live trap (which I prefer, but you may not).
As claimed, you can wind up with more than one critter in the trap at once.
It's easy to transport the trap to an open field or wooded area to set the little furbazoids free. I have nothing against mice or shrews, but not in my house. :-)
This is by far the most effective trap I've ever used.
Worked At First, But Then Failed - a review of the "Tin Cat" February 15, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We purchased this mouse catcher last year when we were suddenly inundated with winter lodgers in the basement. At first, this trap did a fine job, but then it just petered out on us and stopped working.
With items like this it is hard to say where the fault lies, so we are giving it Three Stars. We had better luck though with the Woodstream Havahart Mouse Trap.
Three Stars. Leaves mice sweaty but ready to live outside again. For us the trap stopped trapping after a couple of months.
