Product Description "The olive is native to the Mediterranean region, tropical and central Asia and various parts of Africa. The olive has a history almost as long as that of Western civilization, it's development being one of civilized man's first accomplishments. At a site in Spain, carbon-dating has shown olive seed found there to be eight thousand years old. O. europaea may have been cultivated independently in two places, Crete and Syria. Archeological evidence suggest that olives were being grown in Crete as long ago as 2,500 B.C. From Crete and Syria olives spread to Greece, Rome and other parts of the Mediterranean area. Olives are also grown commercially in California, Australia and South Africa. There is some disagreement over when the trees first appeared in California. Some say they were introduced in 1769 when seeds brought from Mexico were planted. Others site the date 1785 when trees were brought in to make olive oil." The high position held by the Olive tree in ancient as in modern days may be realized when it is remembered that Moses exempted from military service men who would work at its cultivation, and that in Scriptural and classical writings the oil is mentioned as a symbol of goodness and purity, and the tree as representing peace and happiness. The oil, in addition to its wide use in diet, was burnt in the sacred lamps of temples, while the victor in the Olympic games was crowned with its leaves. Olives are not native to the Americas; they were introduced by early Spanish and French settlers. Olive trees were first brought to California in the 18th Century by early Spanish missionaries, who carried with their trees a tradition of agriculture over 5,000 years old. From ancient Greece to modern Spain, the olive tree has played an integral role in many cultures.

Not impressed with phone service January 29, 2010 Lora (Georgia) I had a question about the olive tree that I purchased and was cut short and told by the person that answered the phone at Hirt's that I should Google it because they didn't know anything about it.

Hirt's--a trustworthy seller (Olive tree) May 31, 2009 In the Garden (SF Bay Area) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
The olive tree I received was also quite small (as to be expected for the price). I am not exactly certain how I am going to train this tree because there are two equally-sized tiny branches on a kind of crooked base. Also, it is really taking a long time to get going, but hopefully it will finally take root and take off. Quality product, but just small and taking its time acclimating.
Having sad this, however, I must say that I have ordered numerous plants from Hirt's over the last two-three years and have always been pleased with their timeliness and product.
coffee plants from hirts May 18, 2009 Robert E. Songy MD (metairie, louisiana) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
the plants arrived quickly, well packaged and ready to plant. Five beautiful coffee plants about 12 inches tall in clusters of 5 stems. Excellent instructions. Shiney green leaves. Now a little sunshine, water and we'll see what happens.
